How to Pick Strawberries Properly: A Guide for the Sweetest Success

Strawberry season is one of the most exciting times at Eckert’s, and whether you’re a first-time picker or a seasoned pro, knowing how to pick strawberries properly can make all the difference. By following a few simple tips, you’ll head home with the ripest, juiciest berries—and the best memories from your visit to our farm.

Why Picking Strawberries Correctly Matters

When you know what to look for and how to handle the berries, you’ll not only bring home the best-tasting fruit, but you’ll also help protect our fields. Learning the proper way to pick strawberries ensures that each guest enjoys a beautiful, bountiful field experience.

When Is the Best Time to Pick Strawberries?

Strawberry season at Eckert’s typically begins in early May and lasts for several weeks, depending on weather and crop conditions. The best time to pick is in the cool of the morning when berries are firm, sweet, and freshly ripened by the sun.

🍓 Pro Tip: Check our Crop Update page for the most current picking conditions and availability before you visit.

How to Identify a Ripe Strawberry

Look for berries that are:

  • Fully red from tip to stem (no green or white patches)

  • Plump and glossy

  • Fragrant and firm to the touch

Avoid berries that are soft, shriveled, or pale—these haven’t reached their peak.

The Best Technique for Picking Strawberries

  1. Gently grasp the stem just above the berry.

  2. Pinch or twist the stem to remove the berry without pulling on the plant.

  3. Leave the green cap (calyx) attached to keep your berry fresher longer.

  4. Place berries carefully in your container—don’t pile them too high to avoid bruising.

🧺 Remember: Strawberries don’t continue to ripen after they’re picked, so what you see in the field is what you get!

Be Respectful in the Patch

To make sure everyone gets to enjoy our fields:

  • Only pick what you plan to purchase

  • Stay within designated rows

  • Watch your step—avoid stepping on plants or berries

Our fields are a shared space. Picking responsibly helps keep the experience enjoyable for all our guests.

After You Pick Strawberries: Storage & Enjoyment Tips

  • Keep strawberries refrigerated if not eating immediately.

  • Wash just before eating—not before storing.

  • Use your fresh berries in pies, jams, salads, or simply enjoy them as they are!
