Hipster Lettuce

Kale is having a serious moment, but we’ve long been a fan of this nutrient-dense, leafy green! Even though it’s lettuce-like in nature, kale is actually a member of the cabbage family. It’s an extremely popular pick among our health conscious customers because it’s rich in vitamins A and C, and provides ample calcium and iron. So go ahead and pile on the kale, it won’t hurt.

How to pick and store kale.

There’s no real secret to picking your own kale at Eckert’s, but there are a few quick tips you should know for a good bounty. Select kale that’s dark green in color, with small to medium leaves (roughly the size of an adult hand). Naturally, you’ll want to steer clear of wilted, brown or discolored kale leaves. You can pick kale at our Belleville location during the summer, with the season typically extending from around early July to around mid-August. To store, keep your kale as moisture free as possible. Put it in a storage bag in the crisper.
