How to pick and store tomatoes
When the tomatoes are ripe — or even when they’re not ripe when cooking fried green tomatoes — just break the tomato off the stem right above the calyx or the flower shaped crown at the top of the tomato. Be careful to support the stalk of the plant to avoid breaking. To store, you’ll want to keep your tomatoes at room temperature and out of any direct sunlight.
